In one paragraph

Exercise rehabilitation is the part that makes results last: a short, specific programme that restores strength, control and confidence, progressed at each visit. It is not a gym routine. Three or four exercises done well, and changed as you improve, are worth more than a printed sheet of twenty.

How it goes

  1. 01A few, done well

Three or four exercises chosen for your problem, taught until you can do them without thinking.

  2. 02The right dose

Sets, repetitions and load set to your current tolerance, so it works without flaring the problem.

  3. 03Progressed each visit

When the range or strength target is met, the exercise changes; standing still is not a stage.

  4. 04Back to your life

The last stage is the thing you wanted back: the stairs, the run, the ride, lifting the baby.

What to expect

Bring the clothes and shoes you would exercise in. Most programmes take ten to fifteen minutes a day at home.

Questions

Do I need a gym?

No. Programmes are built around what you have at home; bands and body weight cover most of it.

Should exercises hurt?

A little discomfort that settles within a day can be acceptable; sharp or lasting pain means the dose is wrong and is adjusted.
